Silchar, Oct 15: Cachar Police seized 2.3 lakh Yaba tablets valued at an estimated Rs 57.5 crore and arrested two persons after intercepting a truck bearing a Nagaland registration number in Assam’s Udharbond area.
Cachar Superintendent of Police Partha Protim Das told the press on Thursday that the seizure was made during a naka operation along the Udharbond bypass in the Panch Mile area, under Udharbond police station, following intelligence inputs gathered over the past two to three months.
“For Assam Police in Cachar district, this is the highest recovery against seizure of drugs in terms of black market value,” said Das.
The two arrested persons are from Firozabad in Uttar Pradesh and Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, respectively, the SP said.
“A search conducted in accordance with prescribed NDPS procedures led to the recovery of the tablets concealed in a secret chamber inside the truck,” Das said.
Police are investigating the source of the consignment, its intended destination and the wider network allegedly involved in the interstate trafficking of the contraband.
Investigators are also examining the financial trail to determine where the tablets were procured and who financed the operation.
Police said the operation followed sustained intelligence gathering and was aimed at intercepting the consignment before it could reach its intended destination.
The arrest comes a month after Cachar Police seized heroin and suspected Yaba tablets worth a combined Rs 14 crore in two separate operations.
In the earlier operation, police seized heroin valued at an estimated Rs 13 crore and apprehended Abdul Rahim Laskar of French Nagar in Lailapur, under Dholai police station. The truck was reportedly coming from Mizoram’s Champhai district.
In another raid, police arrested 23-year-old Jairul Islam of Bhoirabpur Part-I, under Kalain police station, in Gumrah Bazar, allegedly recovering 10,000 suspected Yaba tablets weighing around 1.309 kg and valued at approximately Rs 1 crore from a red carry bag in his possession.
