Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) leader and MP Mano Ganesan has welcomed the Saudi Supreme Court’s decision to set aside the death sentence imposed on Sri Lankan national Anojan Sivarasa, describing the development as a tremendous relief for the country and a triumph of national unity.
In a statement, Ganesan expressed gratitude to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its Crown Prince for their support and generosity in the matter.
He also commended the Government of Sri Lanka, under President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, for pursuing diplomatic and legal efforts to secure relief for Sivarasa, saying the government had fulfilled its responsibility towards a Sri Lankan citizen facing a grave situation overseas.
Ganesan acknowledged the role played by opposition political parties, civil society organisations and members of the public, who had set aside their differences to express solidarity with Sivarasa and his family.
He said the collective response demonstrated the strength of a nation united across political and community divisions.
Describing the outcome as a “victory as one nation, standing united”, Ganesan said the case had provided a powerful example of national solidarity, with the country speaking with one voice in support of a fellow citizen.
