Colombo, Oct. 23 (Daily Mirror) - The high population density in Colombo City has contributed to the spread of tuberculosis (TB) over the years, Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa told Parliament today.
Responding to an oral question raised by MP Mujibur Rahman, Dr. Jayatissa said 871 TB cases were reported in Colombo City in 2019, while the number dropped to 736 in 2020 and increased to 796 in 2021.
He said the number of reported cases rose to 1,093 in 2022 and 1,130 in 2023, before declining to 1,064 in 2024 and 968 in 2025.
The Minister also said the spread of the disease had been aggravated by infected individuals failing to seek medical treatment.
However, he noted that the number of reported TB cases in Colombo City had declined in 2025.
