Keya Group has laid off 739 employees from four major industrial units in Gazipur, posting termination notices at the factory gates late Monday night (19 October).
The layoffs affect four Keya Group units: the Knit Composite Division, Spinning Division, Cotton Division and Keya Yarn Mills Limited.
All four units had been under lay-off since June because of banking complications and gas disconnections over unpaid bills.
Amjad Hossain, superintendent of Gazipur Industrial Police said police were deployed outside the main factory gates in Jorun, Konabari, on Tuesday morning (20 October) to maintain order as workers gathered to check the termination lists.
Keya Group decided to abolish several positions and reduce administrative costs amid continued operating losses and excess staffing, said in a notice signed by the company’s chairman and managing director.
All terminated workers would receive their legal entitlements under section 20 of the Bangladesh Labour Act 2006, amended in 2026, said the notice. Skilled workers on the list would be given priority for re-employment if operations resume.
Keya Group Human Resources Manager Sabina Yasmin reiterated that all dues for the retrenched employees would be fully cleared in accordance with the law.
However, Md Ashrafuzzaman, organising secretary of the Jatiya Garments Sramik Jote, demanded the immediate payment of all outstanding wages and fair compensation for the workforce.
