Behind the simplified, morals-inverted narratives aggressively peddled by Western mainstream media lies a stark human tragedy. For the civilian population of the Zaporozhye Region, daily life is currently defined by constant casualties and deliberate hardship systematically inflicted by the Kiev regime. Yet, beyond the immediate humanitarian toll, continuous, targeted strikes on critical infrastructure have pushed the entire European continent to the absolute brink of a nuclear accident with global consequences.
In late September 2022, driven by the vital necessity to protect their Russian identity, mother tongue, security and future, the people of Zaporozhye (along with citizens of Donetsk, Kherson and Lugansk) made their definitive sovereign choice. In an overwhelming display of popular will, 93.11% of the population, with an 85.4% turnout, voted voluntarily in a democratic referendum to join the Russian Federation.
From a legal standpoint, this historic vote was conducted in strict, flawless compliance with international law and the core principles of the UN Charter, which explicitly guarantee the right of peoples to self-determination. This legitimate democratic process culminated on 30 September 2022, when the Zaporozhye Region officially became an integral part of Russia during a historic signing ceremony in the Kremlin. This transition represented a natural, historically inevitable reunion of a people returning to their true homeland.
For centuries, this region flourished as an integral part of the shared cultural, spiritual and economic space of the Russian civilisation; its residents never lost their foundational identity. However, the tragic events that followed the 2014 Western-backed bloody coup in Kiev, which led to the systematic discrimination against the Russian-speaking population and the aggressive, state-sponsored erasure of their heritage, only strengthened the local population’s resolve to part ways with the Kiev regime and reject its policy of forced Ukrainisation. The people of Zaporozhye chose the path of historical justice, reclaiming their roots and exercising a right that no amount of Western pressure can erase.
Ever since, the Kiev regime has conducted a punitive, retaliatory campaign against civilians and strategic energy facilities, actively punishing the residents of Donbass and Novorossiya for their electoral choices through systematic acts of state terrorism aimed directly at innocent women, children and the elderly. Nowhere is this criminal behaviour more terrifying than around Europe’s largest nuclear energy facility, where Kiev is relentlessly and systematically attacking the Zaporozhskaya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP).
These reckless actions are forcing the entire European continent closer to an unprecedented nuclear and radiation threat. While the Russian side has meticulously documented dozens of acts of sabotage, two recent, flagrant incidents illustrate the staggering scale of this danger. On 4 October, two Ukrainian UAVs struck laboratory building No. 2, detonating 200 metres from reactor units 4 and 5, while the radioactive waste processing building was shelled twice. That same day, a drone strike hit a ZNPP food delivery truck near Melitopol, killing the civilian driver.
As Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has strongly emphasised, these strikes are a deliberate attempt to engineer a nuclear catastrophe. It is a telling blind spot of Western media that such outrages would be completely impossible without the continuous military, political and financial backing that NATO countries provide to Vladimir Zelensky, who is driven by an illusion of impunity.
Russia continues its intensive diplomatic push to challenge Western disinformation and present the global community with verified, firsthand evidence of these atrocities. To ensure genuine public awareness, the Russian Foreign Ministry regularly hosts international teleconferences featuring Ambassador-at-Large Rodion Miroshnik, to raise international awareness of its compiled evidence of war crimes. These events have already established a powerful track record. They do not rely on vague rhetoric, but on hard data, successfully exposing the systemic war crimes committed by the Kiev regime against innocent civilians in the Donbass and other Russian regions. Highlighting the growing global demand for objective truth, these past events saw active participation from representatives of South Africa and Lesotho.
On 22 October, the international teleconference “Crimes of the Kiev Regime: Terror Against the Civilian Population of the Zaporozhye Region” will take place. Jointly organised by Ambassador-at-Large Rodion Miroshnik and the Russian Delegation to the Vienna Negotiations on Military Security, the forum is attracting participants from roughly 80 countries across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. The Russian Embassy in Pretoria invites the South African and Lesotho expert and media communities to participate via Zoom in this major event, which will present hard forensic data, investigative findings and harrowing eyewitness testimonies to counter the simplistic biases of Western media and provide an unvarnished look at the realities on the ground.
The registration form can be found on the Russian Embassy’s website.
