Following the case of Ebola recorded in Abuja on Tuesday, the United States has issued a health alert to its nationals.
The Embassy of the United States, Abuja, in a health alert issued on its website, said the Government of Nigeria reported a case of Bundibugyo virus disease known as Ebola on October 20.
The United States Embassy also said health officials are conducting contact tracing.
“According to the Nigerian Ministry of Health, the individual travelled by air from Uganda.
“Ebola is a rare, severe and often fatal haemorrhagic fever illness,” the Embassy of the United States said.
On actions to take, it advised United States nationals to visit the CDC’s website for information on Ebola.
It also said United States nationals should visit the CDC Travellers’ Health Page for Nigeria.
“If at risk for Ebola, alert your healthcare provider if you are experiencing symptoms consistent with Ebola to receive guidance prior to presenting for care.
“Continue to take malaria prophylaxis as recommended by your doctor. Symptoms of malaria can mimic symptoms of Ebola, leading to preventable health scares.
“Monitor your health for 21 days following travel to an area experiencing an Ebola outbreak.
“Review the US Embassy country page for general health information.
“Refer to the Embassy’s list of medical providers.
“Check with your travel insurance provider about medical evacuation options should you fall ill while overseas,” the Embassy of the United States also said.
