Axios, citing U.S. officials, has reported that U.S. President Donald Trump expects Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to refrain from attacking Russian oil refineries, even as Russia continues its attacks on Ukraine.
The website reported early Monday, October 12, that an agreement to halt attacks on power plants and energy networks could be reached if attacks on oil refineries were suspended.
According to the report, a White House official said Trump’s remarks the previous day about an “energy ceasefire” between Russia and Ukraine referred to a possible agreement to halt mutual attacks on oil refineries.
The report added that Trump appears to be pursuing a limited ceasefire on his own, but Russia has not yet agreed to any ceasefire.
Meanwhile, Ukraine is seeking a ceasefire that would also prohibit attacks on power plants.
