Jeff Bezos has a message for American voters. The co-founder of Amazon and Blue Origin says American voters should not trust political candidates who play the blame game. In an interview with Fox News, Bezos also shared his take on socialism's growing popularity among some politicians and voters, which he says stems from this mentality.
He explained that this is driven by issues such as the cost of living and affordability, especially housing. Although he says these are genuine problems, blaming landlords and casting successful businessmen as villains does nothing to solve them."If there's a politician who's picking villains and pointing fingers, that probably means they don't have a solution. Because if that is a solution, instead of blaming somebody, they would be working on the solution," Bezos said. To explain his message, Bezos drew a parallel to his own companies, saying employees who repeatedly blamed others instead of identifying the root cause and finding a lasting fix don't stay in their roles long.
Jeff Bezos explains why blaming landlords won't solve housing problems
Speaking on the factory floor of Blue Origin's Space Coast facility, Bezos acknowledged that affordability has become a genuine concern for Americans. He cited housing costs as an example, saying the problems should not be dismissed but addressed through effective policies."One, we do have real affordability problems. So people look at the cost of housing, for example, and it's very expensive. And so you can't pretend that there are no problems," Bezos said.
"I don't think we should underestimate the problems, but we should also look at what the real solutions are."In his view, government interventions can sometimes make homes more expensive by increasing demand while keeping supply constant. According to Bezos, criticising property owners ignores economic variables that affect housing costs."This isn't what's going on. Housing is a simple supply and demand situation. It's econ(omics) 101," he said, adding that "if you put in place government programs that subsidize demand and constrain supply, you are going to get high prices."Bezos cited Austin as an example of a city where policies designed to make home construction easier have helped bring housing prices down over the past decade."If you can look at a counterexample, which is Austin, where over the last 10 years they've implemented many policies designed to make it easier to build houses, and they have housing prices going down in Austin," Bezos said.
Jeff Bezos pushes back against criticism of billionaires
During the interview, Bezos was also asked about criticism of billionaires by some politicians. He argued that portraying successful entrepreneurs as villains reflects an oppressor-oppressed mentality. He said that treating success itself as wrongdoing overlooks the contributions of people who build businesses."Success is not villainy," Bezos added.
