The bye week couldn't have come at a better time for Jedd Fisch and the Washington Huskies.
When the team traveled east for a 38-26 win over the Purdue Boilermakers, the Huskies had been ravaged by the flu, which left them without several pieces of their rotation, including running back Ansu Sanoe, wide receiver Jordan Clay, defensive tackle Kai McClendon, and offensive lineman Geirean Hatchett. Fisch stated that as many as 18 players were unable to practice leading up to the Purdue game.
Washington also suffered several injuries during the game, including running back Trey Cooley, who was dealing with a shoulder injury and the flu coming into the matchup with the Boilermakers, and was forced to exit midway through the fourth quarter when a hit to his sprained AC joint caused him to fumble and exit the contest after tallying eight carries for a career-high 113 yards and a touchdown.
"Trey should be cleared to practice mid-week. My guess," Fisch said on Monday. "I haven't met with the doctors yet today. Yesterday he was not cleared to practice, but he does not have an injury that will hold him back from playing in a game a week from Saturday, and my impression is he doesn't have an injury that'll hold him back from practicing the second half of this bye."
The Huskies also saw starting edge rusher Ramzak Fruean and defensive tackle DeSean Watts go down with leg injuries, as the former was spotted with a brace on his right knee in the second half, while the latter was helped off in the third quarter. However, Fisch didn't seem overly concerned about the long-term status of either player.
"Sounds like both of those guys will be good to go for Nebraska," the head coach said. "Ramzak will probably miss this week of practice, and then will be cleared probably starting Saturday. I think Watts will probably have some form of individual and some walkthrough stuff this week and then be cleared for next Sunday's practice as well, but both will be cleared for the game."
