The Briefing

- The headlining lot is the slate gray glen plaid suit worn in Pee-wee's Big Holiday (Netflix, 2016), estimated at $8,000–$10,000; a vintage "Pee Wee" brand harmonica — the object that inspired the character's name — carries a comparatively modest estimate of just $100–$200.
- The free exhibition runs through auction day and is open to ticketholders of regular Groundlings shows; bidding is also available online, by phone, or via absentee bid at 310-836-1818.
Julien's Auctions has opened its doors to one of the most personal collections in modern pop-culture history. Beginning October 14 and running through auction day on October 28, fans can walk through a curated display of 439 items from the estate of Paul Reubens at The Groundlings Theatre, 7307 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles — the very stage where his alter ego, Pee-wee Herman, drew its first breath in 1978. Admission to the exhibition is free for ticketholders of The Groundlings' regular shows.
Back to the Birthplace
Reubens shaped the Pee-wee character during an improvisation exercise at The Groundlings in 1978, in a comedic scenario where a man desperately wanted to be funny yet had no talent for it. The act found its footing in downtown Los Angeles before the full stage show moved to the Roxy Theatre on the Sunset Strip, where it was taped as a 1981 HBO special that launched Reubens into national celebrity. Alongside fellow Groundlings Phil Hartman, John Paragon, and Lynne Marie Stewart, he built a world entirely his own — one that fed directly into Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985), Tim Burton's feature-film directorial debut, and then into the CBS Saturday-morning series Pee-wee's Playhouse, which racked up 22 Daytime Emmy Awards across five seasons.
Choosing The Groundlings as the auction venue is not a passive nod to history. It returns the objects to the room where they were conceived, and gives the archive a context that no neutral auction hall could provide.
The Lots That Drive the Collector's Market
The most talked-about item in the catalog is the slate gray glen plaid suit worn by Reubens in Pee-wee's Big Holiday (Netflix, 2016), complete with white shirt, red bowtie, pocket square, and white loafers. Julien's estimates it at $8,000–$10,000.
Bicycles are another focal point of the sale. A full-scale replica of Pee-wee's iconic red Schwinn DX — ridden by Reubens when he accepted the honorary Visionary Award at the 2011 Spike TV Scream Awards (the physical award is included in the lot) — carries an estimate of $5,000–$7,000. A second bicycle lot features the custom "Easy Rider"-themed Schwinn that Reubens rode as captain of the 2010 Buffalo Chip's Annual Legends Charity Ride in Sturgis, South Dakota, also estimated at $5,000–$7,000.
The archive also preserves the writing process. A collection of 13 scripts — one for each episode of Pee-wee's Playhouse Season 1 (1986) — and the Pee-wee's Big Adventure screenplay credited to Phil Hartman, Paul Reubens, and Michael Varhol, which includes a deleted magic shop sequence not in the final cut, are each expected to sell in the $500–$700 range per lot.
The Most Meaningful $100 in the Catalog
Of all 439 pieces, the one that most directly explains who Reubens was is, paradoxically, the cheapest: a vintage "Pee Wee" brand harmonica, manufactured in occupied Japan between approximately 1945 and 1951, still in its original box. Reubens himself publicly identified this toy instrument as the direct source of his character's name. Its pre-sale estimate is a mere $100–$200 — extraordinary value for any collector seeking a tangible piece of how a cultural legend got its title.
A Career Far Bigger Than One Character
Reubens' four decades of work stretched well beyond the gray suit. He appeared in Batman Returns, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Matilda, and Blow, earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for his recurring role on Murphy Brown, and lent his voice to Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), among many other projects.
"Paul Reubens was one of the great performers of his generation: a gifted improviser, a meticulous writer, and an artist who built entire worlds around the characters he created," said Catherine Williamson, Managing Director of Entertainment at Julien's Auctions.
Reubens died on July 30, 2023, at age 70, after privately battling cancer for six years. In 2025, the HBO documentary Pee-wee as Himself, directed by Matt Wolf and built around more than 40 hours of interviews Reubens gave before his death, won three Emmy Awards — Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special, Outstanding Directing, and Outstanding Picture Editing — offering audiences the fullest portrait of the man behind the bow tie that exists on record.
