Strongylo, a small island off the coast of Patmos in Greece’s Dodecanese, has been put up for sale with an asking price of €4.5 million (about $5.2 million). The roughly 54-acre island, located near Lipsi, is being marketed as a place that offers complete privacy, three natural beaches, and strong potential for tourism or residential development.
The listing was posted on Private Islands Inc., a platform that specializes in island sales, and was picked up by international media outlets, including the Daily Mail. It presents the island as a blank canvas for investors looking for a beautiful, peaceful retreat in the Mediterranean.
In the past, sailors used Strongylo as a natural shelter during storms. Today, its landscape remains largely untouched, with lush vegetation and crystal-clear waters.
Undeveloped, With Room to Build
Strongylo is considered one of the most accessible private islands in the area. Part of the Arkioi island group, it lies north of Lipsi and close to Patmos and Leros, and can be reached by boat.

According to the listing, the island is an ideal opportunity for anyone hoping to create a signature Mediterranean getaway. It notes that the island has not yet been developed, so it keeps its raw natural beauty while leaving plenty of room for future building projects.
The island has the stone ruins of an old house and a well, both of which could make it easier to obtain building permits. There is also a natural water source that could be made drinkable with basic filtering. In addition, the island could potentially be connected to the power grid on neighboring Marathos, which has an established electricity network.
Three Beaches and Resort Potential
According to the Daily Mail, Strongylo has three natural beaches. The largest is a sheltered, sandy stretch about 360 feet (110 meters) long, which could be turned into a private lounge area or beach club. The island’s terrain is also well suited to a large private estate or a high-end eco-resort.
The island can be reached by sea, either by private boat or water taxi, from Patmos and Leros. Leros has flights to Athens, and the island’s proximity to Lipsi, the Arkioi islands, and Patmos’ UNESCO World Heritage sites adds to its value.
Unclear Ownership and a Hollywood Rumor
Details about who currently owns the island remain unclear. Some sources say it belongs to private owners who acquired it after a legal battle that reached Greece’s Supreme Court. Other reports claim it was once an investment of actor Johnny Depp, who allegedly bought it for €4.2 million but never developed it.
