National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary has said Ishraque Hossain has been caught in a trap due to Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed's failure to maintain law and order.
Speaking to journalists after exchanging greetings on the occasion of Durga Puja at Dhakeshwari Temple in Dhaka this morning (19 October), he said Ishraque recently entered politics with the aim of stopping drug-related activities.
However, the home minister's failure to control the law and order situation has left others bearing the consequences, he remarked.
Nasiruddin made the remark when Ishraque was still a state minister. He announced his resignation as state minister for liberation war affairs later in the day amid controversy over his gun-wielding anti-drug raid.
"The issue is the home minister's responsibility. Why did Ishraque Bhai get shot? The home minister commits the offence, while someone else suffers for the sin," the NCP leader said.
Criticising the country's law and order situation, Nasiruddin said people are dying and facing oppression in different places, while Salahuddin is busy with the Constitution.
The NCP leader also criticised the BNP government for failing to ensure the security of the Hindu community.
He said the BNP government promised to ensure security for everyone, but members of the Hindu community are not living well. He also pointed to incidents of vandalism in different places over the past three to four months.
Referring to the issue of cow slaughter at Jagannath University, Nasiruddin urged Muslims to remain mindful of the Hindu community while carrying out their activities.
"We will do everything, but we must ensure that our Hindu brothers are not hurt by those actions," he said.
Ishraque's announcement follows a night of confusion after a media report last night claimed that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had directed him to resign. Ishraque later disputed the report, saying it was untrue.
In a Facebook post earlier today, Ishraque, son of the late BNP leader and Dhaka mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, said he intended to resign.
Ishraque then announced his resignation as state minister this afternoon.
