The Los Angeles Rams were supposed to be Super Bowl contenders in 2026, but a 2-4 start has left them with a lot of ground to make up. Now, head coach Sean McVay has more than just the team’s on-field struggles to deal with, as questions about his future have once again started making the rounds.
McVay has long been linked to a potential broadcasting career, and with the TV landscape shifting in recent months, the idea of him leaving the sidelines for the booth has resurfaced.
Mike Florio Explains What Could Push Sean McVay Toward Broadcasting
During this week’s segment of the “Pro Football Talk” show, Mike Florio discussed what could prompt McVay to step away from coaching and pursue a broadcasting career, particularly if the Rams’ season continues to unravel.
“There’s been plenty of talk regarding Travis Kelce [joining the booth], and there’s also this belief that Sean McVay is always lurking, even though he has explained that he came to terms with the burnout that he felt the year after they won the Super Bowl,” Florio said.
“McVay loves the process. He loves what he’s doing. Well, that’s gonna get tested if the Rams, who were the preseason presumptive Lombardi champions, end up not even making the playoffs.”
Florio then brought up the money McVay could make in broadcasting and wondered if that could make taking a break from coaching more appealing.
“Could [Rams’ potential disappointing season] be the thing that ends up causing McVay to take a break? Especially when, as Mike Tomlin says, ‘[Broadcasting is] Full-time pay for part-time work,'” the analyst continued.
“And the pay that you get to be one of the broadcasters of the top games every week. We know what the market is. No one else is getting $37.5M a year like Tom Brady, but still… It’s at least right now… Is it $20M a year?”

McVay has had a remarkable career since the Rams hired him in 2017 at just 30 years old, making him the youngest head coach in the modern era. He also became the youngest head coach to reach and win a Super Bowl and be named NFL Coach of the Year.
McVay quickly turned the Rams from a middling franchise into one of the NFL’s top teams, leading them to Super Bowl LIII in just his second season. He finally hoisted the Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl LVI, when Los Angeles beat the Cincinnati Bengals.

After a disappointing title defense in 2022 that led to the Rams missing the playoffs with a 5-12 record, McVay was heavily linked to a move into broadcasting as reports emerged that Amazon was interested in bringing him into the Thursday Night Football booth.
According to The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand, Amazon has an out clause that could allow the network to pursue McVay again, despite renewing Kirk Herbstreit’s contract this year.
McVay has also come under fire for some of his decisions this season, including the Rams’ travel plans for their Week 1 game against the San Francisco 49ers in Australia and his overall in-game management.
The Rams have been average on both sides of the ball, posting a PFN Defense Impact Score of 77.4, ranking 15th in the NFL, and an Offense Impact Score of 73.7, ranking 18th.
