Five passengers were seriously injured after a 40-foot HOWO truck rammed into two commercial buses at Berger Bus Stop, inward Kara Bridge, around the Ojodu area of Lagos State.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority disclosed this in a statement on the incident, saying the crash involved an interstate commercial Mazda bus and a Toyota Hiace bus, both conveying passengers.
According to the agency, the truck, which was travelling out of Lagos, rammed into the two buses, leaving several occupants injured.
LASTMA operatives stationed around the Ojodu-Berger axis responded swiftly and rescued five seriously injured passengers, comprising three females and two males, including the driver.
The agency said the victims were taken to the Lagos State Emergency and Trauma Centre at the Toll Gate for urgent medical attention, with security personnel from Isheri Police Station assisting in the rescue operation.
The crash caused significant traffic congestion along the affected corridor, with vehicle queues extending backwards to Otedola Bridge.
LASTMA personnel subsequently evacuated the vehicles involved, including the articulated truck, from the carriageway to prevent secondary accidents and restore traffic flow.
The agency added that the vehicles were handed over to the police for further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash and any necessary legal action.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy with the injured passengers and wished them a speedy recovery.
He stressed the importance of responsible driving, strict compliance with road safety regulations and regular maintenance of heavy-duty vehicles.
Bakare-Oki warned that mechanical defects, reckless driving or loss of vehicular control could have catastrophic consequences, particularly on major highways.
He urged operators of articulated trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles to prioritise roadworthiness, exercise caution and remain vigilant while navigating major traffic corridors.
The agency also urged motorists to comply with traffic directives issued by LASTMA officials to promote road safety and prevent avoidable accidents.
The incident comes amid renewed concerns over road safety in Lagos State.
In a related development, the state government is considering a ban on the sale of alcoholic drinks at motor parks as part of efforts to curb reckless driving and reduce road crashes.
The Secretary to the State Government, Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, disclosed the proposal during a meeting with the 57 local government secretaries and representatives of the Police Community Relations Committee.
Salu-Hundeyin said the proposal was among measures being considered to strengthen security and improve road safety, particularly during the Ember months, when travel and traffic activities typically increase.
