Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) and the Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB) will launch an open architectural competition to develop affordable, climate-resilient housing designs for disaster-prone rural areas of Bangladesh.
The two organisations signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) today (25 October) at PKSF Bhaban-1 in Dhaka's Agargaon to launch the initiative.
The signing ceremony was presided over by PKSF Managing Director Md Fazlul Kader. PKSF Deputy Managing Director Md Hasan Khaled and IAB General Secretary Architect Dr Masud Ur Rashid signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organisations.
The competition aims to generate practical, safe and environmentally friendly housing designs that can withstand the effects of climate change and natural disasters.
Design proposals will take into account the geographical and environmental characteristics of Bangladesh's coastal areas, haor and wetland regions, chars, floodplains, hilly areas and the Barind region.
PKSF will select the 10 best designs from the submissions for potential implementation at the field level.
The initiative builds on PKSF's experience under its Resilient Homestead and Livelihood Support (RHL) project, funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF). Under the project, more than 3,500 climate-resilient houses have already been built across seven coastal districts.
PKSF said the new collaboration is expected to help improve housing conditions and strengthen the resilience and adaptive capacity of marginalised communities exposed to climate risks.
