Police in East Kyoga Region have arrested a 35-year-old man in Soroti City over allegations of impersonation, theft, fraud and possession of suspected government stores.
The suspect, identified as Jonathan Ochola, also known as Ekotu Peter or Onoria, is a resident of Majengo Cell, Oderai Majengo Ward, in Soroti City West Division.
According to a police statement dated October 16, 2026, Ochola was arrested by the Flying Squad following a complaint from Katakwi District, where he is accused of posing as a senior army officer attached to the State House Anti-Corruption Unit.
Police allege that the suspect used the identity of Colonel Peter Ekotu to defraud members of the public by claiming he had the authority and connections to influence official processes.
In one of the reported incidents, Ochola allegedly obtained Shs1.2 million from the father of an inmate on remand at Katakwi Prison in connection with a murder case.
He reportedly claimed he could facilitate the inmate’s release on bail through the High Court in Soroti.
Police said a search at the suspect’s residence led to the recovery of two pairs of Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) uniforms, desert boots, a military bag and a cap.
Investigators also reportedly recovered documents containing details relating to the Parish Development Model in Abim District, as well as lists of inmates.
According to police, the suspect allegedly impersonated an officer attached to the State House Anti-Corruption Unit and contacted public officials, reportedly using threats and intimidation to solicit money.
He is also accused of wearing UPDF uniform on several occasions.
Ochola is currently being held at Soroti City East Police Division as investigations continue.
Police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspected cases of impersonation, fraud and extortion to the nearest police station.
The allegations against the suspect have not been tested in court, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
