Violent clashes between protesters and police forces, accompanied by widespread looting and arson, erupted across several French cities Saturday, triggering a fierce exchange of political accusations over responsibility for the
turmoil and the state’s security tactics.
According to media reports, around 500,000 people organized by trade unions and social organizations participated in the mobilization, with some demonstrators briefly breaching town halls in Lille and Marseille before being removed by police using reauthorized stun grenades, while the Interior Ministry reported nearly 300 arrests nationwide by mid-afternoon.
Participants noted the rallies aimed to draw attention to years of unresolved issues involving the economy, climate policy, and inequality. The street violence, which coincided with nationwide demonstrations, prompted French Prime Minister S أ©bastien Lecornu to denounce radical far-left groups, accusing them of orchestrating riots and exploiting public disorder ahead of upcoming elections.
In statements published on his official social media account, Prime Minister Lecornu emphasized that “far-left groups organized the violence in several French cities,” adding that “criminals got involved to loot and destroy” during what was intended to be public rallies.
He firmly rejected political intimidation, asserting: “To those who clearly want to use this violence as a ‘warm-up’ before the presidential election, I say this clearly: we will not be intimidated. No one will impose their political agenda through violence.”
Lecornu highlighted the sharp distinction between civil rights and unlawful destruction, stating that “peaceful demonstrations have their place in our Republic; fires, looting, and attacks have none.” The Prime Minister extended unreserved support to law enforcement personnel who faced “extremely intense violence,” confirming that “instructions given are clear: prevent abuses, protect property and people, arrest those responsible and bring them to justice.” He added,
“At a time when some are trying to discredit our law enforcement, I want to tell the French people that they can be proud of their police officers and gendarmes.” On the political front, left-wing leaders turned their criticism against law enforcement strategies.
Jean-Luc Mأ©lenchon, de facto leader of the party La France Insoumise, accused security authorities in Paris of provocation, stating on X that “confrontation seems to be the aim of this policing strategy” and alleging that the Paris police prefect “organized the disorder.” Similarly, Greens leader Marine Tondelier urged the government to “review” its crowd-control doctrines, warning that current methods endanger “protesters and police officers” alike.
Conversely, National Rally presidential candidate Marine Le Pen condemned left-wing rhetoric for “legitimizing violence” and hijacking genuine public grievances. She stated that “legitimate social demands have once again been taken hostage by the far left and the speeches of Jean-Luc Mأ©lenchon’s MPs who, by legitimizing violence, by considering order as oppression and disorder as a right, seek to plunge the country into chaos.” Echoing those concerns, National Rally President Jordan Bardella denounced the rioters as “professionals of chaos,” while ally ?ric Ciotti criticized the emergence of “red fascism” in urban streets.
Horizons party candidate and former Prime Minister ?douard Philippe insisted that “the Republic must respond with the utmost firmness to the rioters who offend it,” warning that “a lack of firmness in the legal response will only fuel the anger of the millions of French people who legitimately demand order in the country.” – KUNA
