Windows’ built-in screenshot Snipping Tool gets the job done, but if you’re taking screenshots as often as I am, it starts to feel pretty limited. ShareX is a free, open-source tool that provides a more robust set of capture and editing tools without adding a bunch of unnecessary complexity.
It covers the basics you’d expect—full-screen captures, a single window, or a custom area—but it also handles scrolling captures, screen recording, and quick GIFs.
The real value, though, is in its advanced editing tools. ShareX’s editor lets you add useful markups to your images, like arrows, text, and highlights. Plus, if there’s anything sensitive in the shot, you can blur or pixelate directly in the app.
The feature I probably use the most is optical character recognition, or OCR. Essentially, OCR allows you to pull out text from an image and copy and paste it elsewhere. Sure, Snipping Tool has this as well, but I’ve found ShareX’s OCR to be more accurate, capturing less text noise from an image overall.
Yes, its advanced feature set does come with a deep settings menu, but don’t let that scare you off. Just start with basic screenshots, GIFs, and a couple of keyboard shortcuts, then maybe experiment from there.
