The BJP on Tuesday scaled up its attack on the Congress over the allegations of sexual harassment against now-sacked Jawaharlal Nehru University professor and Lok Sabha member Angomcha Bimol Akoijam.
A delegation of 15 women BJP MPs led by the party's Mahila Morcha president Roop Kumari Choudhary met President Droupadi Murmu and appealed to her to remove Akoijam from the Lok Sabha.
The delegation, which had D. Purandeswari and Bansuri Swaraj, sought security for the students who have filed sexual harassment complaints against Akoijam, who was a faculty member at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems. JNU vice-chancellor Santishree D. Pandit on Friday dismissed Akoijam, saying the internal committee had established the allegations against the professor.
"The students are scared because Dr Bimol is an influential personality and he enjoys full support of the Congress. We appealed to the President to remove him from the Lok Sabha. The students should get full protection. The President has assured us that she will get the matter investigated and appropriate action will be taken," Choudhary said.
