South Africa's first deaf Miss South Africa, Mia le Roux, tied the knot with her long-time partner, Luke ten Oever, on 16 October 2026, and the country could not hold back its emotions.
The ceremony, attended by just 60 guests including former Miss SA Jo-Ann Strauss, unfolded at the picturesque La Paris Estate in Franschhoek, nestled in the heart of the Cape Winelands. But it was a raw, behind-the-scenes preparation video that truly captured the nation's heart.
Filmed in a charming getting-ready room with wooden ceiling beams and vintage décor, the clip shows Mia wiping away tears as an attendant fans her face to keep her composed. Through her emotion, she reflected on her journey:
"You guys, I've got the best parents ever and I didn't know what, if I would be okay, after them, because of my condition. But then I found Luke. And he loved me unconditionally with everything."
The moment in the behind-the-scenes footage that silenced the room came when a woman present reminded Mia of the words she had spoken on stage when she was crowned Miss South Africa. Mia then repeated them herself, her voice steady with conviction:
"I'm a proudly South African deaf woman."
Mia made history in 2024 when she became the first deaf woman ever to be crowned Miss South Africa. She and Luke began dating in 2023, and after a private engagement in July 2025, they finally celebrated their love in front of those closest to them.
She walked down the aisle in a custom ivory satin gown by South African designer Anel Botha. A second gown awaited her at the reception. Luke's vows drew on themes of faith and courage, closing with the Afrikaans words, "My liefie, ons het dit gemaak" — my love, we made it. Mia, in turn, thanked him for recognising her worth in a world that had not always done so.
The celebrations also featured a giant Italian wedding cake and a cameo from the couple's beloved dachshund, Ada. Their wedding was captured by Chris and San Photography and is set to air on SABC3's Top Billing.
