Pakistan Railways has canceled all leave for field officers for three months after declaring an emergency across the department to improve train safety.
The decision was taken on the instructions of Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi, according to a statement issued by Pakistan Railways headquarters in Lahore.
Under the new directives, railway officers must conduct field visits and supervise train operations on Sundays. Officers traveling to other cities for official duties have also been instructed to use trains.
The chief engineers of the civil and mechanical departments have been directed to submit daily reports to the ministry on matters under their supervision. The head of safety must also provide daily reports.
The emergency measures will remain in effect until December 31.
“We will provide passengers with the safest possible travel in line with the prime minister’s vision,” Abbasi said.
The decision comes amid growing safety concerns, with more than 55 accidents involving passenger and freight trains reported across Pakistan since January 2026.
According to railway sources, these accidents have left several people dead, dozens injured, and caused millions of rupees in damage to railway infrastructure.
Several derailments have been reported in recent months, including incidents involving the Rawal Express, Khyber Mail, and Yusufwala coal train.
Railway sources identified the Sukkur, Karachi, and Multan divisions among the areas reporting the highest number of accidents.
The repeated incidents have raised questions about railway maintenance standards and the implementation of safety measures, despite previous instructions from the railways minister.
