The 2026 college football season has delivered back-to-back thrilling Saturdays over the past two weeks, and while this weekend isn't quite as loaded as either of those slates, there are still some intriguing games that will have an impact for the rest of the year.
As the hierarchy of the sport this season has been turned upside down by the results of the last two weeks, the second half of the season promises more drama and even higher stakes.
Here at Sooners Wire, we'll be watching the latest opportunity for the Oklahoma Sooners as they head to Starkville to face the Mississippi State Bulldogs. That game kicks off at 2:30 p.m., and both teams really need a win as they enter the second half of their seasons.
Here are the top five games to watch in Week 8.
1. Houston at Utah, 9:15 p.m. CT
Houston and Utah meet in the week's biggest game, and it's one of the most important Big 12 games so far. The league is still wide open at the top, and this game will go a long way toward deciding which team moves forward. The Cougars have one loss and come off a strong win over Oklahoma State last week. Head coach Willie Fritz and his team are firmly in the conference title race, but they face a big road test this week. Quarterback Conner Weigman needs to stay hot in what is going to be a hostile late-night environment.
Of the three unbeaten teams left in the Big 12, only the Utes will face a real test this weekend. It's by far the biggest test that new head coach Morgan Scalley's team has seen in 2026, but they are exactly where they want to be right now. The two-pronged quarterback attack of starter Devon Dampier and backup Bryd Ficklin make this offense an absolute machine on the ground, but they haven't seen an opponent like this yet. The eyes of college football will be on Salt Lake City on Saturday night.
2. Ole Miss at Texas, 6:30 p.m. CT

Ole Miss and Texas are heading in opposite directions at this stage of the year, but two incredibly talented teams will meet on Saturday night. No undefeated teams remain in the SEC, so several teams have a chance to make some noise over the next few weeks. The Rebels have bounced back nicely after dropping their only game against Florida a few weeks ago. Last week's victory over Missouri re-affirmed that head coach Pete Golding's team is a force in the SEC this year. Led by one of the best quarterbacks in the nation in Trinidad Chambliss, the offense is going to give this team a chance to win a lot of games this year.
On the other hand, the Longhorns have lost two straight after an unbeaten start, falling to Oklahoma and Florida. Despite all of the talent on the roster, the 'Horns are facing a CFP elimination game in late October. Head coach Steve Sarkisian has a choice to make at quarterback. He can stick with the struggling Arch Manning, or turn to backup K.J. Lacey Jr. to spark the offense. They have to have this one, and the pressure will be on at home.
3. LSU at Auburn, 11:00 a.m. CT

LSU and Auburn meet in a battle of the Tigers after both schools earned important wins last week. Both teams have taken their lumps already this season, and because of that, the loser on Saturday afternoon is probably out of the running for the playoff. However, the winner would have another impressive win under its belt. For LSU, a couple of close losses have hurt them in the standings, but a blowout win last week over Mississippi State was exactly what the Tigers needed. Head coach Lane Kiffin and quarterback Sam Leavitt now take their team back on the road for yet another important matchup.
For Auburn, they will look to build on the success of last week's upset win over Georgia. It was a huge win for both the present and the future of the program, but another big test awaits as the Tigers come back home. New head coach Alex Golesh and quarterback Byrum Brown will have to deal with a very talented opposing defense, and if this team can string together two upset victories, there's no telling what they could become moving forward.
4. North Dakota State at New Mexico, 9:00 p.m. CT

North Dakota State and New Mexico will meet in what is a huge game for both the Group of Six and the Mountain West. While neither of these teams looks like the top contender for that automatic G6 playoff spot, that can certainly change, and a win here would go a long ways. The Bison have just one loss so far in their first FBS season, but a big road conference test awaits them on Saturday night. Head coach Tim Polasek is going to be leaning on quarterback Nathan Hayes and the offense against a very strong and experienced defense.
The Lobos also have just one loss, but they are currently undefeated against the Mountain West and the G6. They currently sit in the conference's driver's seat, but they'll need to play well at home to stay there. Head coach Jason Eck has been impressive during his time in Albuquerque. He seems to have landed on Toa Fa'avae as his starting quarterback, though passing threat Luke Moga and running threat James Laubstein are still available under center as well. The ground attack for the hosts could prove to be the difference in this late-night game.
5. Indiana at Michigan, 11:00 a.m. CT

Indiana and Michigan play in the biggest game of the day for the Big Ten, as that league continues to give us surprises week after week. The Hoosiers suffered their first loss since last season last week against Ohio State, but it was very easily a game they could have won. Now, they'll look to go on the road and bounce back in Ann Arbor. Head coach Curt Cignetti still has one of the nation's best teams, but now they have something to prove after a loss. Quarterback Josh Hoover will have to handle the atmosphere in the Big House on Saturday afternoon.
The Wolverines already have two losses, but they got a much-needed win over Penn State last week. If head coach Kyle Whittingham's team wants to make the CFP this season, they'll have to pull off the upset at home this week. He's made a quarterback change this week, benching starter Bryce Underwood in favor of backup Tommy Carr. It's a move that they hope can provide a spark on offense as they play host in Michigan Stadium.
