Ask any serious bird watcher about birds in Panama. They will agree that it is a world class birdwatching paradise. This country boasts an astonishing avifauna of over 1,020 bird species comprising roughly 10% of the world’s total bird population and offering a higher variety than the United States and Canada combined. Panama provides a spectacular theater for birders and attracts birders from around the globe chasing “mega” sightings. Some of the most iconic and highly sought-after birds include:
Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja): As Panama’s national bird, this massive, apex avian predator lives deep within rainforests, particularly in the Darién region. Spotting one is a holy grail experience for birdwatchers.
Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno): Revered for its vibrant emerald-green plumage and impossibly long tail streamers, this bird thrives in the high-altitude cloud forests of western Panama, such as Chiriquí.
Rufous Motmot (Baryphthengus martii): Known for its striking rufous and green plumage and unique racket-tipped tail, which it swings slowly like a pendulum
Blue Cotinga (Cotinga nattererii): A highly prized canopy bird. The male glows with an intense, electric sapphire-blue plumage that stands out dramatically against the green forest.
Toucans and Aracaris: Vibrant species like the Keel-billed Toucan and the regional near-endemic Fiery-billed Aracari light up fruit-bearing trees throughout lowland and foothill forests.
