A Dhaka court has placed Diamond World owner Dilip Kumar Agarwala on a fresh two-day remand in a case over the attempted murder of student A Jabbar during the July Uprising, after police sought seven more days for questioning.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Zakir Hossain passed the order today (25 October) after hearing the prosecution and defence, with the prosecution opposing bail and the defence seeking cancellation of the remand and his release on bail.
Investigation Officer Sub-Inspector Md Suman Mia of Uttara West Police Station produced Agarwala before the court after his previous four-day remand ended and sought another seven days for questioning.
In the remand application, the investigator said Agarwala had provided some important information during the earlier questioning but withheld substantial details about the incident.
Police were verifying the information and needed further interrogation to establish the facts, recover the firearm used in the shooting and arrest other accused, the application said.
Defence lawyers Anwarul Kabir Babul, Abdul Al Mansur Ripon and Mahbub, among others, opposed the remand and sought bail. Public Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon opposed their plea.
After hearing both sides, the court granted two days of remand.
On 21 October, a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate's court had granted Agarwala a second four-day remand in the attempted murder case.
The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested him from a house in Banani on 19 October. The following day, a court granted him one day of remand in a money laundering case involving allegations of smuggling worth Tk678.19 crore.
After that remand ended on 21 October, the court sent him to jail before he was shown arrested in the shooting case and remanded for four days.
According to the case statement, Jabbar was shot in front of BNS Centre on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway under Uttara West Police Station on 5 August 2024, during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. He remained under hospital treatment until 26 September that year.
After his condition improved, Jabbar filed the attempted murder case with Uttara West Police Station on 27 March 2025. The case names 50 people, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, and accuses another 100–150 unidentified people.
Earlier, on 3 September 2024, the then Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Agarwala over allegations of gold and diamond smuggling, fraud, forgery and money laundering. The arrest followed an operation at Diamond World's office in Gulshan, Dhaka, which continued until midnight.
He was later shown arrested in a case over the killing of BNP activist Hridoy Ahmed in Badda during the July Uprising. Police also questioned him on remand in that case before he was subsequently released on bail.
