RATCHABURI — 19 October 2026, People exposed to floodwater should seek immediate medical attention if they develop a fever or unusual calf pain, a provincial health official has warned, citing the risk of leptospirosis, a bacterial infection commonly associated with contaminated water.
Dr. Pajaree Areerob, Ratchaburi’s provincial public health doctor, issued the warning while visiting patients and elderly residents affected by prolonged flooding in Photharam district.
Some homes have been inundated for nearly two weeks, leaving stagnant water that has turned black and begun to smell. During the visit, Dr. Pajaree also distributed relief bags and medicines to affected residents.
She said the severity of flooding in several areas had raised concerns about deteriorating water quality. Prolonged exposure to floodwater can also increase the risk of skin problems, including immersion-related foot damage.
Leptospirosis is another major concern, she said, particularly for people who spend long periods wading through or standing in floodwater. The risk is greater for those with cuts or other wounds on their feet, as the bacteria can enter the body through broken skin.
People who cannot avoid contact with floodwater should wash their feet thoroughly with clean water and soap afterward and check for wounds, Dr. Pajaree advised.
Anyone who develops a high fever or unusual pain in the calf muscles after exposure to floodwater should seek medical care immediately and inform the doctor about the exposure. Blood tests may be needed to check for leptospirosis so that treatment can begin promptly.
