Passengers travelling with pets on Zagreb’s trams and buses must follow specific rules, with different requirements depending on the animal’s size and type.
While small pets can travel free of charge in suitable transport boxes, larger dogs must meet additional conditions, including wearing a muzzle and travelling on a short lead.
The rules, outlined by Zagreb public transport operator ZET in video posted on social media on Tuesday, are designed to ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers.
Which pets can travel for free?
Small domestic animals, including cats and dogs up to 30 centimetres tall, can travel on Zagreb’s trams and buses without an additional ticket.
However, they must remain inside a suitable transport box throughout the journey.
ZET controller Tomislav Greguranić explained that small animals can be transported free of charge, provided they are kept in an appropriate carrier.
Owners are responsible for ensuring that the box is safely positioned and that their pets do not disturb other passengers.
What are the rules for larger dogs?
Dogs taller than 30 centimetres are subject to additional requirements.
They must wear a muzzle and be kept on a short lead while travelling on public transport. Owners must also purchase an additional ticket in accordance with ZET’s applicable fare rules.
Passengers travelling with pets must enter the vehicle through the front doors and remain in the front section of the tram or bus for the duration of the journey.
Each passenger may bring only one pet on board.
Owners must also carry the required documentation for their animal and are responsible for its behaviour and for keeping the vehicle clean.
Special rules for assistance dogs
Different provisions apply to assistance dogs, including guide dogs, rehabilitation dogs and therapy dogs.
The rules also cover dogs undergoing training for these roles, as well as puppies participating in socialisation programmes.
These dogs must wear their designated official equipment while travelling, allowing other passengers and public transport staff to identify their role.
What pet owners should remember
Before boarding a Zagreb tram or bus with a pet, owners should check the requirements that apply to their animal.
Small pets must be kept in suitable transport boxes, while larger dogs need a muzzle, a short lead and an additional ticket.
Passengers should also use the designated entrance and remain in the permitted section of the vehicle.
Following these requirements helps make public transport safer and more comfortable for passengers travelling with animals and those without pets.
