By Zoila Palma: Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Rodwell Ferguson is calling for greater investment in agricultural innovation, sustainable farming and stronger food systems as Belize joins the international community in observing World Food Day.
Speaking at the World Food Day celebration at Chunox St. Viator Vocational High School, Ferguson highlighted this year’s theme, “Innovate Today. Nourish Tomorrow,” emphasizing the need to ensure that agricultural technologies and proven solutions are accessible, affordable and suited to the needs of local farmers.
Ferguson pointed to the global hunger challenge, noting that approximately 645 million people faced hunger in 2025, while about one in three people worldwide could not afford a healthy diet. “Hunger is not inevitable,” the Minister said.
However, he noted that many small-scale producers, particularly women and young people, continue to face barriers to financing, technology, infrastructure, information and markets.
Ferguson highlighted innovations that can help farmers make better decisions and use resources more efficiently, including digital services that provide weather forecasts and market prices, animal disease surveillance systems, soil sensors and precision irrigation.
Ferguson also reiterated the importance of sustainable agriculture, protecting the environment and ensuring access to safe, nutritious and affordable food. He said the Ministry continues to work with development partners and social partners while reaching out to rural and urban communities, particularly vulnerable populations, to improve food security and food quality.
The Minister of Agriculture recognized farmers and food suppliers for their essential role in bringing food from farms to consumers, even amid global crises.
He encouraged continued support for agriculture, emphasizing that decisions and innovations made today will influence food security for future generations.
