PETALING JAYA: The lawyers acting for two policemen allegedly roughed up by Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) director-general Shuhaily Zain have rubbished claims that their clients are funded by criminal syndicates.
Messrs Kamal Hisham & Associates warned that its clients reserve the right to sue those spreading such allegations, Utusan Malaysia reported.
It said the law firm had also been implicated in the allegations.
"We respect the right to freedom of speech, which is enshrined under Article 10(1)(a) of the Federal Constitution. However, that freedom is not absolute.
"Whoever makes these false claims would be committing an offence under Section 505 of the Penal Code (for criminal defamation) and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (for the improper use of network facilities," it said.
The case gained public attention after CCTV footage allegedly showing Shuhaily confronting a person at KLIA Terminal 1 went viral.
AKPS confirmed the footage was genuine and said the incident occurred while Shuhaily was inspecting preparations at KLIA ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix.
Bukit Aman’s criminal investigation department is investigating the incident under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.
The law firm said the two policemen filed additional police reports on Oct 10 to submit further evidence about the case to the cops.
It said the case could extend to the use of criminal force to obstruct a public servant from discharging their duty, use of criminal force to dishonour a person and criminal intimidation.
"We leave it to the police to investigate and the Attorney-General's Chambers to evaluate the case."
