"Whether you're travelling to Canada, immigrating, or becoming a Canadian citizen, here are 10 tips to help you get your application right and avoid mistakes that could slow down processing."
What are the application tips from IRCC?
- IRCC advises applicants to submit forms online wherever possible, as the digital process allows them to verify completeness before submission.
- Every question on the form must be answered, and where a question does not apply, applicants should write "N/A" rather than leave it blank.
- The authority also recommends using the downloadable document checklist available on each programme's web page, and stresses that any document not written in English or French must be translated by a certified translator before submission.
- Applicants are cautioned against sending more than what is required.
- Where copies are requested, original documents should be retained.
- Photo submissions must strictly follow the published requirements, and applicants are advised to bring the official instructions to their photographer and review the photos before sending them in.
- One of the more notable requirements is the declaration of all family members in the application, including those who will not be travelling to Canada.
- IRCC also calls on applicants to provide a regularly monitored email address and to ensure their mailing address is complete and accurate.
- Before submission, all documents requiring a signature must be signed and dated, and the correct fees must be paid using the approved payment method.
- Finally, if IRCC requests additional information at any stage, applicants must respond before the stated deadline.
What is Canada's Express Entry?
Canada uses the Express Entry system as its primary mechanism for managing applications under several of its key economic immigration programmes, including the Federal Skilled Worker Programme, the Federal Skilled Trades Programme, and the Canadian Experience Class.
Candidates are ranked using a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) that scores individuals on factors such as age, education, language proficiency, and work experience. Those who receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) can then submit a full application for permanent residence.
IRCC regularly issues rounds of invitations through Express Entry draws, making it one of the most widely used pathways for skilled foreign nationals seeking to settle in Canada permanently.
