In a movie as nonsensical as the new Street Fighter adaptation, getting too into the weeds of “consistency” with the video games might seem like a fool’s errand, but there is one thing about the film that myself and other fans of Capcom’s fighting game series are having trouble getting past: What the hell did they do to Cammy?
For those not in the know, Cammy’s place in the Street Fighter universe is that of a tool turned into a hero. She is one of series villain M. Bison’s “Dolls,” a group of young women brainwashed by the Shadaloo organization. Cammy has been a mainstay of the series since Super Street Fighter II, and has spent much of these games fighting against Bison and trying to reclaim her autonomy. However, she was at one point a servant of Bison, and that is the role she plays in the Street Fighter movie. That’s not the part that Street Fighter fans are beefing with; it’s that the typically stoic soldier has been turned into a depraved, flirtatious, Harley Quinn-style character that feels like a stand-in for a different character.

Cammy is portrayed by Mel Jarnson, who fighting game movie fans might recognize from her brief performance as Nitara in the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie. This version of Cammy is portrayed as M. Bison’s right hand, and is one of the only characters who isn’t portrayed as sniveling underneath his heel the whole time. As she carries out Bison’s orders, she is no-nonsense and commands the room, but she’s also strangely seductive (she straight up flirts with Chun-Li at one point), prone to sudden outbursts, and feels like she’s filling in the sadistic character role that would have been filled by Juri in a different movie. Juri wouldn’t have made sense in this specific role, as she and Bison are the farthest thing from allies, but it definitely feels like the filmmakers wanted Juri in the mix and couldn’t fit her in, and so they just grafted her essence onto Cammy.
“Was Cammy’s actress trying to audition for Sindel?” a fan writes on Reddit. “What was with that random angry scream when she was sitting with Bison?”
“And she’s acting NOTHING like her video game counterpart,” another responds. “I think the writers really, really, really wanted to have Juri Han in this movie. But they couldn’t because this is Street Fighter 2 (she was introduced in 4 IIRC) and she also hates Bison, so it wouldn’t make much of a sense for her to work with him. So they made the worst possible choice and created a weird chimera of a character. She looks like Cammy White, but under the hood is Juri Han. Cammy White giggling and walking like Harley Quinn towards Chun-Li. What the hell is this? Cammy White is even colder than Chun-Li in the games.”

While the movie doesn’t really get into it, Jamson has said in a recent interview that this version of Cammy is, in fact, mind controlled like the rest of the Dolls. So while she may be acting like a completely different person in this movie, it’s possible that in a future sequel this hold that Bison has on her might be broken and the eccentric part of her could disappear in favor of the more hardened soldier fans know her to be, but for now, this character assassination of Cammy is one of the most regrettable parts of Street Fighter. The movie takes almost nothing seriously and admittedly plays a bit fast and loose with its treatment of other characters, too, but it is definitely the most drastic change the movie makes to who these characters are.
