Rio de Janeiro Daily Brief — Friday, October 16, 2026

A Friday for museums, a rain jacket and a gig.

TODAY’S PICK — LAPA ROCK

Ira! brings the acoustic roar to Circo Voador

Ira! plays their Acústico 20 Anos show at Circo Voador in Lapa tonight, with the venue opening from 8 p.m. The gig sits inside the arches on Rua dos Arcos, a short walk from the Carioca metro exit.

The show celebrates 20 years of the band’s Acústico MTV album and is billed as its Rio farewell. It is for ages 18 and over, and teenagers above 14 may enter only with a parent or guardian.

Tickets were listed through Eventim and the Circo Voador box office at R$80 to R$100 (about US$16 to US$20) for half-price and R$160 to R$200 (about US$31 to US$39) for full price, depending on the batch, at about 5.10 reais per dollar. Use the metro to Cinelândia or Carioca and walk up Mem de Sá with the crowd.

If you want a cheaper pre-gig option, eat in Lapa itself. The area changes fast after dark, so keep to the main strip from the arches toward the Lapa steps.

OUTDOORS — BOTANIC GARDEN MORNING

Morning light in Jardim Botânico

Jardim Botânico’s arboretum is open Thursday to Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entry costs R$40 (about US$8) for Brazilian residents and R$80 (about US$16) for foreign visitors, but with storms forecast, treat it as a dry-spell option only.

The palm avenue is the classic walk, and the garden offers little cover. Check the radar before you go.

Parque Lage nearby is free to enter, but check its opening hours and the weather first.

COFFEE & WHERE TO WORK — CENTRO

Desk time near the great reading rooms

The Real Gabinete Português de Leitura in Centro is free to visit; check its opening hours on the day.

For actual wifi and a table, work from cafes around Largo do Machado or Botafogo, where several spots run all-day hours on weekdays.

If you need a proper coworking desk, book ahead in Botafogo or Copacabana, as Friday walk-in seats go fast.

THE CONTRASTING PLAY — CENTRO CULTURE

A quieter Rio in the city centre

For a different Friday, Centro’s cultural circuit, including CCBB and Paço Imperial, keeps you under cover. Check each venue’s hours and prices before you go.

The Museu do Amanhã on Praça Mauá is open Thursday to Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the last entry at 5 p.m. This is the right route if you want air conditioning and art when the weather turns.

Check opening hours and ticket prices at each venue, as they can change at short notice.

TONIGHT, AFTER 7 PM

Lapa has the pull; Centro has the calm

The clear plan is Circo Voador for Ira! from 8 p.m. in Lapa. The streets around the venue will be busy, so eat early nearby.

If you want live music without a big ticket, Lapa’s smaller bars around Avenida Mem de Sá fill up after 9 p.m. Friday.

For a quieter drink after 7 p.m., head to Botafogo or Praça São Salvador in Laranjeiras, where the crowd is more local.

If you have no ticket for Ira!, do not push into a full Lapa late; the bar scene near Cinelândia is an easier fallback.

ALSO ON TODAY

Victor & Leo — Essência tour — Qualistage, Barra da Tijuca — Friday night, doors 8 p.m., show 10 p.m., tickets from R$80 (about US$16)

Museu do Amanhã — Praça Mauá, Centro — Thursday to Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., last entry 5 p.m.

THE DAYS AHEAD

FRI 16 — Hot with showers and afternoon thunderstorms; Centro culture by day, Ira! at Circo Voador at 8 p.m. if the weather allows.

SAT 17 — 21–25°C and unsettled, with about 10 mm of rain; keep plans flexible.

SUN 18 — 20–23°C with only light showers; the best day of the weekend for outdoor plans.

MON 19 — Mild; check the forecast before booking outdoor plans.

TUE 20 — Forecast not confirmed; recheck before booking outdoor calls or flights.

It is not a good beach day: showers, thunderstorms and wind gusts of 40–50 km/h are forecast for Rio. If you go, stay out of the water during storms and check the lifeguard flags.

Do not leave belongings unattended, and move indoors when thunder starts.

Take the metro to Carioca or Cinelândia and walk up with the crowd toward the Arcos da Lapa.

After the show, stay on the main streets back toward the metro or a ride app pickup near Cinelândia.

Centro’s cultural circuit, including CCBB, Paço Imperial and the Museu do Amanhã (open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.), keeps you under cover.

Check each venue’s hours and prices before you go.
