KUALA LUMPUR: PKR has denied allegations that the party is weaponising khalwat (close proximity) claims against rival political leaders to weaken opponents.
PKR vice-president Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari emphasised that PKR does not use personal issues as a basis for political rivalry.
"We have better things to do than set up khalwat traps.
"It has never been discussed or arranged, either secretly or openly, to trap political opponents. That is not our style," he said after officiating the Majlis Semarak Kasih with Yayasan Selangor students here today.
Yesterday, the Selangor Islamic Religious Department detained a former minister and political leader for alleged khalwat with a woman, believed to be the founder of a non-governmental organisation, in Petaling Jaya.
Earlier today, Bersama co-founder Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad admitted to being one of two people detained by the department on suspicion of khalwat (close proximity) on Oct 15, saying he regretted his lapse in judgment.
He said that he was with a woman when Jais officers arrived at the location.
Nik Nazmi apologised to his wife, family and everyone affected by his lapse in judgment during the incident. He added that he would fully cooperate with any legal process.
Meanwhile, commenting on preparations for the Melaka election, Amirudin, who is also Pakatan Harapan election strategy director, said PH is finalising several decisions.
"I believe within a week we will set a clearer direction for the election. We will offer good candidates, who are currently in the final screening stages," he said.
Responding to questions on candidate selection for the Melaka polls, Amirudin said the party will field individuals dedicated to community service and equipped with experience.
"In some areas, we want to allow candidates to gain experience, particularly in seats where baseline support may be lower. That will provide a long-term plan for the party and the PH coalition," he said.
Addressing potential cooperation with Bersatu, Amirudin noted that discussions have not been finalised and a decision will be reached soon.
PKR had previously confirmed that it would contest nine seats in the Melaka state election.
Its secretary-general, Fuziah Salleh, said PH would contest more seats overall if PKR fielded candidates in nine constituencies.
