CARMEL — Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. has been charged in Carmel for allegedly having marijuana in his possession.
According to court documents, Richardson faces a Class B misdemeanor charge for possession of marijuana. The charge was officially filed on Monday, Oct. 19.
In a statement issued Friday, the Colts said “We are aware of the situation involving Anthony Richardson and are currently gathering additional information. We will have no further comment at this time.”
Colts coach Shane Steichen says Richardson remains the team’s backup quarterback.
For the time being.
“Right now he is,” Steichen said. “Yes.”
The charges stem from an October 12 traffic stop near Springmill Boulevard and Silver Stream Drive. The police report stated that the license plate on the 2023 Dodge Charger did not match the registration and had expired and, once the car pulled over the officer said he smelled a marijuana odor.
Identified as the driver, Richardson cooperated with officers. He admitted to smoking marijuana in the vehicle and told police he had a small amount still in the car. When the car was searched, police did find a small amount of marijuana in a Mason jar and an open bag of gummies.
Those substances later tested positive for THC.
The court waived his initial hearing, which was scheduled for Dec. 9. Online court records indicate that a bench trial in the case is scheduled to occur on Jan. 4, 2027.
While the NFL no longer suspends players for testing positive for THC, Richardson may face some kind of penalty from the league, as this is a legal issue.
“Yeah, I have conversations with all guys that have incidents, and I keep those in-house,” Steichen said. “I don't put them in the public. I keep those in-house.”
Steichen also referred to the team statement when asked if he knew of the incident prior to Friday.
