KUALA LUMPUR: A university student from China pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court today to two charges of causing grievous hurt to his former girlfriend and her brother in a stabbing incident last month.
Chen Jun was charged with stabbing Leong Kai Ting, 21, and her 18-year-old brother, Shun Jie, in a manner that could have caused their deaths.
The offences allegedly took place at a house in Taman Sri Bintang, Kepong, at 5am on Sept 29.
The charges were framed under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 20 years, a fine or whipping upon conviction.
Chen, who appeared in a wheelchair, entered his pleas after the charges were read out to him in Mandarin before judge Suhaila Haron.
Deputy public prosecutor Nurainizatul Farhana Zainal did not offer bail, citing the non-bailable nature of the offences.
However, she said if the court granted bail, it should be set at RM8,000 with two local sureties, and Chen should surrender his passport.
Lawyer Ling Yee Siew urged the court to set minimal bail, saying her client was suffering from depression and required treatment.
"Based on a Sept 14 medical report, my client is suffering from depression.
"He inflicted injuries on his own leg due to his condition and needs treatment," she said.
Ling added that Chen was a finance student and was not a flight risk.
Suhaila granted bail at RM8,000 with two local sureties and ordered Chen's passport to be impounded.
The court fixed Nov 11 for mention.
