Hawks’ 47-point demolition of the Hornets set a franchise record—and raised bigger questions for Charlotte originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
A 47-point loss is bad enough. A 47-point loss that becomes the largest victory in the other team’s franchise history is a different kind of home opener.
Atlanta hammered Charlotte 128-81 on Friday, turning an early lead into a runaway and setting a new franchise mark for margin of victory. The Hawks’ previous record was a 46-point win over Sacramento in 2017. This time, Jalen Johnson and Aaron Wiggins led the way with 19 points apiece, and Atlanta had contributions throughout the lineup.
The tail of the tape
The score tells part of the story. The turnovers tell another. Charlotte gave the ball away 27 times, and the Hawks turned those mistakes into opportunities to keep widening the gap. By the end, the Hornets had been held to 81 points and were booed by a sellout crowd in their first home game of the season.

There are understandable factors behind a rough night. Charlotte was without key players, including Kon Knueppel and Coby White, while Grant Williams also missed the game. Missing rotation pieces can make it difficult to handle a deep, aggressive opponent. It does not make a 47-point margin any easier to explain away.

What happens next is the question
For Atlanta, the result is a loud early statement: the Hawks can turn defense and ball pressure into a blowout, not just a close win. For Charlotte, the immediate question is how the team responds when the next opponent tests its ball security and composure.
One game does not define a season, especially this early. But the opening home crowd saw a record-setting opponent and a Hornets team that struggled to keep the game from unraveling. That is a difficult first impression to erase.
Atlanta is right back at home on Saturday, as they will host the Houston Rockets. For Charlotte, they will need a quick bounce back, as they will host winless Miami on Saturday.
