Meth Lab Raid in California Leads to Charges

UNITED STATES · DRUG ENFORCEMENT

Federal prosecutors in California have charged three men from Mexico after agents dismantled a methamphetamine lab in Terra Bella, a community in Tulare County, on Friday 11 September 2026. The US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California announced the case on Wednesday 16 September 2026.

Agents seized about 100 pounds of crystal methamphetamine, hundreds of gallons of the drug in liquid form and about US$600,000 in cash. The case is now five weeks old, but a second and larger bust announced on 5 October gives it fresh relevance for US readers.

What Agents Found in Terra Bella

On Friday 11 September 2026, agents executed a search warrant at a residence in Terra Bella. They found acetone canisters, boxes of muriatic acid, propane tanks, blue 50-gallon drums, several coolers and two large freezers.

Prosecutors say the items were used to form a methamphetamine conversion laboratory. A conversion lab turns the drug from a liquid solution into crystals that can be sold.

The seizure totalled about 100 pounds of crystal methamphetamine and hundreds of gallons of methamphetamine in solution. Agents also took about US$600,000 in cash and six firearms.

Who Is Charged and With What

Jose Diarte-Perez, 46, and Carlos Beltran-Ochoa, 27, are charged with conspiracy to manufacture and traffic methamphetamine. Both are also charged with possessing firearms in furtherance of a drug trafficking offence.

A third man, Lamberto Elorza-Chavez, 39, is charged only with being an illegal alien in possession of a firearm. Prosecutors describe all three as Mexican nationals living illegally in Terra Bella.

If convicted of the conspiracy count, the first two men face a mandatory minimum of 10 years and up to life in prison. They could also face a fine of up to US$10 million.

A charge is an allegation, not a finding of guilt. All three men are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

A Larger Bust Weeks Later

On 5 October 2026, the Drug Enforcement Administration’s San Francisco office announced a second California lab bust. Agents and sheriff’s deputies from Kern and San Bernardino counties seized 574 pounds of methamphetamine and 1,567 pounds in liquid form, a total of 2,141 pounds.

The lab was in a home in a rural desert neighbourhood. Five people from Sinaloa, a state in north-western Mexico, were arrested, and agents recovered three firearms and several thousand dollars in cash.

A San Bernardino County Fire Protection District hazmat unit helped process the site, which authorities described as dangerous and unsanitary. Public reports do not say that this bust and the Terra Bella case are linked.

What It Means for You

For US readers, the two cases show that methamphetamine can be finished into crystal inside American homes, not only across the border. In the October case a hazmat unit helped process the site.

None of the releases reviewed ties either lab to a named cartel, so any such claim remains unproven. Court filings, not press reports, will settle who ran each operation.

What Is Not Known

The releases reviewed do not say who owned or ran the Terra Bella lab beyond the three people charged. They do not allege a link to any cartel.

It is not known how long the lab operated or where the finished drug was headed. The names of the five people arrested in October and the exact date of that raid have not been published.

No trial dates or plea positions had been found as of Wednesday 21 October 2026. It is also unknown whether the two cases share any suppliers.
