Dak Prescott's $240 million Cowboys contract in 2024 included $231 million guaranteed

Dak Prescott secured his place at the centre of the Dallas Cowboys' future in September 2024, when he signed a record-breaking contract extension worth $240 million. The four-year agreement included $231 million in guaranteed money and an $80 million signing bonus, making him the NFL's highest-paid player by average annual value at the time.

The deal came just hours before Dallas opened its season against the Cleveland Browns. For Prescott, it was a major financial milestone. For owner Jerry Jones, it was a costly commitment to a quarterback expected to lead one of football's most valuable franchises towards another Super Bowl.

How Dak Prescott secured his $240 million Cowboys contract

The agreement arrived after months of uncertainty over Prescott's future in Dallas. Entering the 2024 season, the quarterback was in the final year of his previous four-year, $160 million contract.

Without an extension, he could have entered free agency in 2025, leaving the Cowboys facing the possibility of losing their starting quarterback without receiving anything in return. Both sides had strong reasons to reach an agreement. Prescott wanted long-term security, while Dallas needed stability at the most important position in football. Negotiations continued into the opening weekend before the team announced the deal on September 8, 2024.

Prescott was preparing for the season opener when his agent, Todd France, delivered the news. ESPN reported that the quarterback was in his hotel room in Cleveland with teammate Ezekiel Elliott and his physical therapist when the call came through. The agreement gave Prescott a four-year extension worth $240 million, keeping him under contract through the 2028 season. It also raised the financial stakes for a franchise that had struggled to turn regular-season success into deep playoff runs.Prescott expressed his desire to remain with Dallas rather than pursue another team.“I wanted to be a Cowboy,” he said. “I wanted to stay a Cowboy and it got done.”The statement reflected his connection to the organisation, which selected him in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Since then, he had developed into one of the league's leading quarterbacks and a central figure in the Cowboys' offence.According to NFL.com, the extension included $231 million in guaranteed money and an $80 million signing bonus. citeturn797939search0

Breaking down Dak Prescott's $231 million guaranteed contract

The headline figure attracted attention across the NFL, but the contract's structure matters just as much as its total value.Prescott's $240 million agreement averages $60 million per season. That figure made him the first NFL player to reach a $60 million average annual value, setting a new benchmark for quarterback pay at the time. The contract also included $231 million in total guarantees. However, total guaranteed money and money fully guaranteed at signing are not the same thing. Reports placed the amount fully guaranteed at signing at $129 million, with additional guarantees tied to future contract conditions. The deal's key financial details were:

The $80 million signing bonus provided Prescott with a substantial payment at the start of the agreement. Meanwhile, the salary and guarantee structure gave both sides a framework for managing the contract over several seasons.Dallas also secured protections within the deal, including reported no-trade and no-franchise-tag provisions. Those terms limited some of the team's options while giving Prescott greater control over his future. The agreement surpassed the previous benchmark set by Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, whose contract included $230 million fully guaranteed. Prescott's $231 million in total guarantees therefore set a new record for the largest guaranteed amount reported in an NFL contract at the time.ESPN's report covered Prescott's reaction to the deal and his motivation to turn the financial milestone into success on the field. citeturn797939search1

Why the Dallas Cowboys invested so heavily in Dak Prescott

Prescott's contract reflected more than his passing statistics.

Dallas had built its offence around him, and replacing an established starting quarterback would have created a major challenge for the organisation. His 2023 season offered a strong case for the investment. Prescott threw for 4,516 yards and 36 touchdowns, with nine interceptions. He also finished second in the NFL Most Valuable Player voting, reinforcing his standing among the league's top quarterbacks. The Cowboys entered the 2024 campaign after winning 12 regular-season games in each of the previous three seasons.

Prescott had helped guide Dallas to the playoffs in those years, making him an important part of the team's consistent regular-season success. However, his playoff record remained a concern. Dallas had not reached the Super Bowl since the 1995 season, and Prescott had yet to lead the franchise to the championship game. That history added pressure to the new agreement. A large contract can secure a player's future, but it cannot guarantee postseason success.

Prescott and the Cowboys now had an even greater financial commitment tied to the same goal. The quarterback's new deal also arrived after Dallas had extended wide receiver CeeDee Lamb on a four-year contract worth approximately $136 million. Keeping both players gave the Cowboys an established passing combination, although it also required the team to manage a significant portion of its salary cap around offensive talent. The decision showed how much Dallas valued continuity. Yet it also meant the organisation would face continued scrutiny over its ability to build a complete roster around its highly paid stars.

Dak Prescott's $240 million deal puts Super Bowl expectations in focus

Prescott's contract extension settled one major question about his future, but it did not settle the debate over his legacy. At the time of signing, the deal placed him at the top of the NFL's pay scale. That status brought recognition, security and a clear message about the Cowboys' faith in him.

It also raised expectations for what he needed to deliver. For Dallas, the challenge is to turn its investment into postseason progress. A quarterback earning $60 million annually is expected to lead an offence capable of competing with the strongest teams in the league. That requires more than individual production. Protection from the offensive line, reliable receivers, a balanced running game and a strong defence all play a role.Prescott's extension also illustrates how quickly the NFL's financial landscape changes. Quarterback contracts continue to rise as teams compete to secure elite players, and a record deal can become an ordinary benchmark within a few seasons.

Still, the numbers tell only part of the story. Prescott had spent his entire professional career with Dallas, developing from a fourth-round selection into the franchise's long-term starter.

The 2024 agreement rewarded that progress and removed the immediate threat of free agency. The ultimate test, however, remains the same. The Cowboys have invested heavily in Prescott because they believe he can lead them to a championship. Whether that faith produces a Super Bowl appearance will shape how the contract is judged long after the record-breaking figures fade from the headlines.
