Two people were killed in separate shootings in Brussels overnight, including a police officer who was fatally shot while attempting to stop suspects in a stolen car, Belgian media reported on Tuesday.
The Brussels Public Prosecutor’s Office confirmed a fatal shooting in the Ixelles district, near the European Parliament, as well as a separate incident in the Jette district in which a police officer died from his injuries, according to French-language news outlet RTL Info.
Authorities have not established a connection between the two incidents.
In Jette, police officers attempted to stop a stolen vehicle when the suspects tried to flee and opened fire, triggering a shootout. One officer was shot in the head and later died.
Special police units subsequently arrested a suspect. Three firearms were found inside the stolen vehicle, RTL Info reported.
The prosecutor’s office said the officer, who belonged to the Brussels Anti-Aggression Brigade (BAA), died at around 12:45am on Tuesday after being shot.
