KATHMANDU, Oct 16: Survivors of the Bhotekoshi floods are experiencing psychological distress after losing family members and witnessing loved ones being swept away, with some showing symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Anju Karki, chief of the District Health Office, Nuwakot, said survivors initially experienced panic and sleeplessness. Some continue to suffer from recurring memories of the disaster, nightmares, anxiety and depression, while children and people with pre-existing mental health conditions remain particularly vulnerable.

Amrita Gurung, a psychologist at the Trishuli-based Psychological Support Center, said some survivors panic at the sight of water, relive the disaster and worry about their future. School- and college-age children have also been found worrying about continuing their education.
Karki said some survivors have turned to alcohol to cope with their pain. Psychosocial counselling at local holding centers and in affected communities has helped many recover, but some children and people with pre-existing mental health conditions continue to need support. Patients requiring specialized care are referred to hospitals.
Counselling, psychiatric treatment and plans to train school nurses are among the measures being used to address the psychological impact. The construction of temporary shelters has also helped some survivors regain hope, Gurung said.
Asmina Shrestha, chief of the District Health Office, Rasuwa, said survivors were gradually improving following group counselling and treatment by mental health professionals deployed in affected villages.
