A FORMER AFRICAN PRESIDENT MAY BECOME A SAINT! How Did Mwalimu Nyerere Do Things Differently?
Yes, you read that right.
A man who ruled a country, controlled an army, managed billions – is now on the road to becoming a Catholic Saint.
His name is Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere – Tanzania’s founding President.
Last Sunday, October 11, the Bishop of Morogoro, Bishop Lazarus Msimbe, told thousands at St. Patrick’s Cathedral: _”Keep praying for Mwalimu. 27 years after his death, his journey to sainthood has begun.”
Since 2005, the Vatican has officially recognized him as *Servant of God* – the first step to sainthood. His case is now at the witness-interrogation stage. Next: Venerable, then Blessed, then Saint.
But how did a politician become a saint-in-waiting? What did he do differently?
While other African presidents were building empires of wealth, Nyerere was building something else.
*1. HE LED WITHOUT STEALING*
At a time when African leaders were becoming billionaires in office, Nyerere died with no foreign account, no mansion abroad, no business empire. He retired to his village, Butiama, to farm. His integrity was his wealth.
2. HE LED BY PERSUADING, NOT BEATING
Bishop Msimbe said it best: _”He was a teacher, not a dictator.”_ Nyerere didn’t need soldiers to force people to listen. His weapon was his tongue – eloquent, logical, respectful. He corrected without humiliating. He led without coercion. That is rare in African politics.
3. HE LIVED WHAT HE PREACHED
His Ujamaa – African Socialism – was not just policy. It was his life. Humility. Love for the poor. Simple lifestyle. He wore the same Kaunda suit while others wore Italian designers. He believed leadership is service, not status.
4. HE LEFT POWER VOLUNTARILY
In 1985, at the height of his power, he voluntarily stepped down – something almost unheard of in Africa then and now. He said leaders should not cling to power.
So while we pray for his canonization, the real question Bishop Msimbe wants us to ask is:
If Nyerere could be humble in State House, why can’t our leaders today be humble in Government House?
If Nyerere could be honest with millions in oil money, why can’t we be honest with small budgets?
If a President can become a Saint, why can’t a Councilor live with integrity?
Mwalimu didn’t just rule Tanzania. He showed Africa that power can be holy.
And that is why the Church thinks he deserves to be a saint.
