The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance scored a landslide victory in the first Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC) election, bagging 34 of 42 seats or wards on Tuesday (October 6, 2026).
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked the people of Silchar, southern Assam’s economic hub where the BJP found its first foothold in the northeast, for reposing their faith in the party.
“The outcome reflects the importance people attach to development, peace, connectivity, empowerment and better governance,” he said at the State party headquarters in Guwahati after the results came in.
According to the result charts released by the election authorities, the BJP won 32 seats, two of them—Ward 9 and Ward 20—uncontested. Its ally Asom Gana Parishad won two.
Congress managed two seats while independents bagged the remaining eight wards.
The last civic body polls in Silchar were held a decade ago, when the town was a Municipal Board. It was elevated to a corporation in September 2025, five years after the Board was dissolved.
