The Pieriga Prosecutor's Office has completed a criminal case involving the illegal death of a brown bear. The perpetrator was fined 31,200 euros.
In October 2025, while hunting in Ogre County, the unnamed defendant intentionally fired with a rifle from a hunting tower, killing a protected brown bear.
Killing the bear caused damage to the environment in the amount of 29,600 euros, it was reckoned. The Nature Conservation Board demanded the compensation for the damage; the defendant has paid up.
The defendant pleaded guilty to the crime, expressed remorse for what he had done, and agreed not to contest the criminal proceedings by drawing up a prosecutor's order.
The bear was shot in the dark during a hunt where shooting raccoon dogs, wild boars, and foxes was allowed, and it was determined that the act was not self-defence, as the hunter was aware of what animal he had shot.
