WNBA veteran Sophie Cunningham has a pretty blunt message for critics and media commentators out there speculating about her future with the Indiana Fever.
While the WNBA offseason begins to scorch as the Indiana Fever post-season continues, guard Sophie Cunningham couldn’t care less what “we” are saying. After the commentary over the last few days took up whether the franchise should offload the sharpshooter, this is whatshe had to say.
Addressing the Offseason Rumors
Cunningham and the conversation that had enveloped her only grew louder following an influential column from a national sports personality that urged the Fever to explore other options as it looks to build its upcoming roster.
It did not take long for Cunningham to decide she would not be willing to allow the critics to speak on her behalf, taking the opportunity to call them out from her own social media and the pages of her podcast.
“The moon will continue to shine whether or not you like it,” she wrote on social media. “Just like the moon will shine when the time is right, so will we all.” Cunningham also shared an encouraging message on social media: “The universe, whatever it is, takes its time to shine us.
The veteran guard reiterated her argument in her podcast episode and illustrated her on-court value that doesn’t always show up on the box score.
Cunningham averaged 41.9 percent three-point shooting and was effective over the course of 22.2 minutes per game, which the guard argued goes beyond the numbers.
Looking Ahead to Free Agency
With general manager Amber Cox and the Fever front office exploring all options for next season, Cunningham’s announcement is sure to be top of mind for WNBA fans and critics. Tough, vocal and brash, the veteran guard has handled the media frenzy with dignity, yet has yet to reveal her next move.
