The daring escape, which reportedly occurred on Thursday night, sparked concern among residents and traders, with questions emerging over how the suspects managed to leave a heavily guarded police station undetected.
According to a police report, the four men escaped from their cell and fled to an unknown destination. Their absence was discovered on Friday morning when officers conducting routine checks realised they were missing.
The discovery prompted an alarm, drawing other officers into a search of the police station and its surroundings as efforts to trace the escapees began.
Who are the four Embu escapees?
Embu County police boss Sarah Koki confirmed the incident, stating that the four suspects were facing charges related to murder, robbery with violence and stealing.
“It is true there are suspects who escaped from the cell. One of the suspects is facing a murder charge, two robbery with violence charges, while the fourth one is accused of stealing. We are following the suspects in a bid to rearrest them,” she said, as quoted by Nation.
Koki added that escaping from lawful custody was a criminal offence and that the suspects would face additional charges if apprehended.
She said officers began searching for the men immediately after learning of the escape and vowed to ensure they were returned to custody.
“We started looking for the prisoners immediately we learnt that they had made good their escape,” she said.
The police boss appealed to members of the public to share any information that could help officers locate and arrest the suspects.
Embu residents raise alarm over escape
News of the escape caused anxiety in Embu town and neighbouring areas, with some traders and residents expressing fears about their safety.
Some business owners alleged that the escapees had previously been involved in breaking into business premises, stealing property and threatening residents.
One trader warned that the suspects could cause renewed insecurity if they were not arrested and returned to custody.
The incident has also raised questions about security at Itabua Police Station, which is located within the Eastern Region Police headquarters and is considered a heavily guarded facility.
