October 12, Colombo (LNW): President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has announced a further increase in public sector salaries from January 2027, with starting pay for teachers expected to reach Rs. 65,000 and that for doctors to rise to Rs. 94,000.
Speaking at a public rally in Nikaweratiya on Sunday, 11 October, the President said the government intended to continue improving the remuneration of state employees, following the salary adjustments introduced through its first Budget.
Dissanayake stressed that an effective public service was essential to delivering development programmes, improving the quality of government services and ensuring that public institutions could respond more efficiently to the needs of citizens.
Alongside the proposed pay increase, the President outlined plans to recruit approximately 121,000 additional employees across the public sector. The recruitment drive is expected to cover several key areas, including education, policing and local administration, with new appointments planned for teachers, police officers and Grama Niladhari officers.
He said candidates would be selected through competitive examinations and interviews, rather than political patronage, emphasising that recruitment should be based on merit and suitability for the relevant positions.
The President also announced plans to revise allowances for Grama Niladhari officers, Pirivena institutions and trainee teachers, signalling a broader effort to address remuneration and staffing requirements across different sections of the public service.
Dissanayake said investment in public sector employees was necessary to build a capable workforce that could support national development and improve service delivery. He maintained that strengthening government institutions would be central to the administration’s wider development objectives.
