The Delhi Police has written to social media platform X over misleading posts by a man claiming that IPS officer Sumit Jha had resigned amid protests by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), officials said on Wednesday.
The posts allegedly circulated during the CJP's October protest. The repeated claims also surfaced during the outfit's earlier protest in July, they said.
The post by a man named Sayed Chaudhary claimed that Jha, Staff Officer to the Delhi Police Commissioner, has resigned.
The police have sought the accounts' IP addresses to ascertain whether they were being operated from Pakistan, a senior police officer said.
The misleading content was uploaded on Facebook, Instagram and X, prompting the police to take up the matter with the platforms, they said.
During the earlier protest in July, the Delhi Police had issued a clarification on X, describing a viral video claiming Jha had resigned over student protests as fake and AI-generated.
The police had also shared a link to authentic footage of the officer addressing the public about misinformation campaigns and urged people not to circulate the edited clip.
The police are continuously monitoring social media platforms for misleading posts and taking action against content that could create confusion, officials said.
