The High Court in Kabale has adjourned a petition challenging the January 15, 2026, parliamentary election results for Bukimbiri County in Kisoro District to November 13, 2026, when judgment is expected.
The petition was filed by Asigario Turyagyenda, who contested the seat on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket, challenging the victory of independent candidate Eddie Kwizera Wagahungu.
According to the official results, Wagahungu won the election with 14,761 votes, followed by Turyagyenda with 12,553 votes. Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate James Owebeyi finished third with 102 votes.
Turyagyenda is asking the court to examine alleged irregularities in the conduct of the election and the declaration of the results.
The case was first heard on September 16, 2026, at the Kabale High Court Circuit on Kikungiri Hill before visiting High Court Judge Justice Dr Farouq Lubega. The matter was subsequently adjourned to October 15 before being further postponed to November 13 for judgment.
Speaking to journalists after the court session, Turyagyenda, who appeared alongside his witnesses, said he had sought judicial intervention over alleged electoral irregularities.
He claimed that some of his polling agents had been harassed and beaten on election day at polling stations, including Iremera Health Centre and Kijuguta. He also alleged that voter bribery had undermined the credibility of the electoral process.
Turyagyenda’s lead lawyer, Jude Byamukama, accused the declared winner of committing electoral offences and said the petitioner remained optimistic that the court would nullify the election results.
However, Wagahungu dismissed the allegations, claiming that the affidavits presented to court contained falsehoods. He maintained that his victory was by God’s power and expressed confidence in his electoral win.
The court is expected to deliver its judgment on November 13, 2026, potentially determining the outcome of the dispute over the Bukimbiri County parliamentary seat.
