Durham, N.C.-based Duke Health and Gastonia, N.C.-based CaroMont Health are forming a partnership to develop two hospitals in Mecklenburg County, according to an Oct. 14 joint news release shared with Becker’s.
The systems plan to submit certificate of need applications by Oct. 15 for a 120-bed hospital in the University City area and an 80-bed hospital in the River District, according to Duke Health and CaroMont Health officials. The 200 beds would address part of the 389 additional beds the 2026 North Carolina State Medical Facilities Plan identified as needed in the county.
If approved, the hospitals would be owned and operated by a new company that Duke Health and CaroMont own equally and lead jointly. Both systems will remain independent. They expect a decision on the applications by the end of March 2027, and the hospitals could open in 2031, according to the release. Specific services for each campus are still being developed.
“The rapidly growing Charlotte region needs more access to care and more options for the highest quality care locally,” Duke University Health System CEO David Zaas, MD, said in the release.
The partnership comes as several North Carolina systems pursue new hospitals in a growing state. CaroMont plans to build its first South Carolina hospital, and in June, four systems filed applications for five new hospitals across the state in three days.
