Two lorry drivers have been detained by the police on charges of murdering a fellow lorry driver during a drunken altercation and burying his body in an isolated area near Sholavaram in Tiruvallur district. The police are planning to exhume the body in the presence of a tahsildar on Saturday morning.
The police said the victim Gokul, 28, from Kanniyakumari district, was employed as a lorry driver with a private transport company at Alamathi near Sholavaram. He had been missing since October 7, following which his younger brother, Rahul, lodged a complaint with the Sholavaram police.
The police registered a case and launched an investigation. They examined CCTV camera footage from Alamathi and detained two drivers, identified as Ayyappan and Sathish, on suspicion.
During interrogation, the two allegedly told the police that an altercation had broken out while they were under the influence of alcohol. They claimed that they took Gokul to an isolated, overgrown area and struck him on the head with a helmet. Gokul collapsed and died, following which the two drivers dug a pit and buried his body inside, according to the police.
The suspects subsequently took the police to the location and identified the spot where they had allegedly buried the body.
The police said the circumstances under which Gokul died would be established after the body was recovered and examined.
