Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam appeared before investigators at Delhi’s Vasant Kunj North police station on Thursday in connection with a sexual harassment case, days after being dismissed from JNU as a professor.
Akoijam was served a police notice on Wednesday, asking him to join the probe.
JNU dismissed Akoijam on October 9 following an internal committee inquiry into sexual misconduct complaints filed by 11 women students
in May.
Akoijam’s supporters gathered at Imphal airport in Manipur on Thursday to express solidarity with him before his departure for Delhi, amid chants of “Long
live Manipur”.
Surrounded by supporters and reporters at the airport, Akoijam said: “I am going there (Delhi) because there is a police summons. And don’t worry. Justice will be done…I repeat, justice will be done and this is the beginning of the fight against injustice. I will be fighting not only for the injustice meted out to me but also for the decades of suffering that my people are facing….”
Akoijam was booked on October 11 on a complaint of JNU’s chief security officer. The BJP in Delhi and Manipur has since stepped up its demand for action against Akoijam and criticised the Congress leadership for its silence on the allegations.
On Thursday, a group of BJP women MPs met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in Delhi and requested him to refer the allegations against Akoijam to the Parliament Ethics Committee, and asked whether he should continue as an MP.
Akoijam has rejected the charges as “concocted and fabricated”. He claimed the police complaint did not mention marks-for-sex charges.
